A fire pump is part of the water supply for a fire sprinkler system and operates on electric, diesel or steam power. The connection of the pump is either connected to the public groundwater supply network, or to a fixed water source (for example, a reservoir, a lake,….etc).

The pump delivers water flow at higher pressure to the sprinkler system risers and hose pipes. A fire pump is tested and listed for use specifically for fire service by a third-party testing and listing agency, such as UL or FM Global. The main code governing fire pump installations in North America is the NFPA 20 standard issued by the National Fire Protection Association for the installation of stationary fire pumps for fire protection.

Fire pumps are powered by either an electric motor or a diesel engine, or sometimes a steam turbine. If the local building code requires power that is independent of the local electric power grid, a pump that uses an electric motor, when connected via an included transfer switch, may use an emergency generator installation.

The fire pump starts when the pressure in the fire sprinkler system drops below a threshold. Sprinkler system pressure drops significantly when one or more fire sprinklers are exposed to heat above their design temperature, open, and release water. Alternately, other fire hose reels or other fire fighting connections are opened, causing pressure drop in the main fire fighting switch.

Fire pumps are needed when the local municipal water system cannot provide sufficient pressure to meet the hydraulic design requirements of a fire sprinkler system. This usually occurs if the building is very tall, as in the case of high-rise buildings, or in systems that require relatively high longitudinal pressure at the fire sprinkler in order to supply a large amount of water, as in the case of storage tanks. Fire pumps are also needed if the water supply is to be provided for fire protection from a ground level water storage tank.

Types of pumps used in the fire service include: horizontal split case, vertical split case, vertical line, vertical turbine and end suction.

Jockey Auxiliary Pump A utility pump
is a small pump that is connected to a fire sprinkler system and is intended to maintain the pressure in the fire protection piping system to an artificially high level such that the operation of one fire sprinkler will cause a pressure drop that will be felt by the automatic fire pump control, which will cause the fire pump to start fire pump. The assist pump is an essential part of the fire pump control system. The auxiliary pump shall have a lower flow volume than the flow to a single sprinkler to ensure a low system pressure. Jockey pumps are typically small, multistage centrifugal pumps, and do not have to be listed or approved for fire system use. However, control equipment for auxiliary pumps may carry approvals. Jockey pumps shall be at 3% of the main fire pump flow and provide 10psi more pressure than the main fire pump

Diesel pump

It is used as an auxiliary pump in the event of a power outage at the site, and the motor operates with batteries, which in turn drives the motor to operate the pumps
